I just saw 'Last Train Home' at a First Weekend Club screening. The purpose of the First Weekend Club is to help promote Canadian movies. They provide a way of enjoy what is usually referred to as 'Method Movie Going'.
Method Movie Going is really fun. Before and/or after a movie, you take part in an activity that relates to the movie. In this situation, the documentary was about a Chinese family. Before the movie started, we enjoyed a live Chinese harp concert and a dragon dance witch was very interesting. This being a First Weekend Club event, we also had the complimentary wine and appetizers... lets not forget about those comfy couchs, dimmed lights and beautiful location!
'Last Train Home' was an insight in the life of a Chinese family that is trying to provide a better life for there kids.
It's a little slow paced at first but once it picks up, you will be emotionally engaged until the end. It's quite the experience to be able to look into the lives of people in a different culture. The cinematography was great. The landscape and the different locations were used in a very effective manner.
The event was great and I think more people should become members of the First Weekend Club(it's free!!): http://www.firstweekendclub.ca/canada-screens-vancouver/

A funny story... There is always some prizes to be won at these events. You can get 1 ticket 3 tickets or for $5 your arms length. My arms are long since I'm 6,8Ft tall and I usually get the $5 deal. Since I haven't been winning, today, I decided to go with the 3 ticket deal.
The last prize was one free month of DVD rentals by mail from Videomatica( http://twitter.com/Videomatica ) and I WON!!!! Woohoo!!! Only problem is that I was asked to put my hand in the jar to pick the winner..... Awkward.... I picked my number... I got lucky!!!
